Southwest Flight Cancellation Policy- Cancellation Fee & Refund Process

Well canceling a flight is not a fun-driven task, sometimes it turns so hectic. Most airlines charge heavy amounts as a cancellation charge and in some cases, they don’t even give any refund for a canceled flight.

But fortunately, Southwest Airlines doesn’t impose any amount as a cancellation charge.  If you have canceled a flight for which you have paid cash, your money will be refunded in a credit (called a travel fund by Southwest Airlines).

And if you have paid via Rapid reward points, you would get a full points refund.

Steps to cancel Southwest Airlines flight ticket

  • After login to your account, tap on “My Account” in the top right corner of the webpage.
  • You will get a prompt of your all upcoming flights.
  • Select the flight you wanna cancel and click on “Cancel Flight” tab.
  • After confirmation of flight cancellation, select how to want your refund.
  • If your ticket is completely refundable, you will get the option of requesting a refund or a travel fund for future use.
  • In case if the ticket is non-refundable, you will be able to appeal travel funds for future use.
  • Now tap the yellow “Cancel Flight” tab at the bottom of the page to complete the cancellation process.

Southwest Airlines Cancellation Policy

Southwest Airlines have a quite generous cancellation policy. No baggage charges, easy-to-use frequent flyer service, approachable and fantastic customer service as well as no cancellation fees. Cancellation policies vary with the category of tickets you have purchased.

Wanna Get Away Tickets

Wanna Get Away tickets have slightly complex norms regarding flight cancellations than Business Select or Anytime fares, but still it’s quite customer-friendly. You can cancel your booking up to 10 minutes before your flight.

These tickets have lowest price fares that Southwest offers, and for personal travel, most of the people prefer this class. Canceling a Wanna Get Away purchased via cash, the entire amount will be saved as a reusable travel fund for future utilization.

This travel fund must be employed within a year of ticket booking. However, Southwest Airlines revitalizes expired travel funds under some affordable charges.

And if you have bought tickets with Rapid Reward points, you will get back your points in Southwest accounts. Associated taxes with the booking will be used as a reusable travel fund.

Note: Save your confirmation number of canceled flights for future access to travel funds.

Business Select, Anytime and Senior Tickets

Business Select, Anytime and Senior Tickets have expensive tickets, but their cancellation policy is pretty good. Your entire purchase amount will be refunded to your original mode of payment.

If you didn’t cancel your flight at least 10 minutes before take-off your purchase amount will be added to your travel fund.

Flights Ticket paid with Gift Card

Flight booking using the Gift card is completely non-refundable and has certain rules different from cash or reward points. They have an earlier expiry date of travel funds rather than cash or reward point.

Southwest Airlines Refund Policy

Not all the bookings are refundable but they are reusable if you cancel your booking at least 10 minutes before the departure of your scheduled flight.

For refundable ticketless flight reservation only:

  • If your flight has not departed, you may apply for a refund plea:
    • Online at their official website, after flight cancellation process
    • By calling their reservation department
    • By calling the customer support team
    • By writing to the Refunds Department at their official address
  • If your flight has departed, you may apply for a refund plea:
    • By calling their reservation department
    • By calling the customer support team
    • By writing to the Refunds Department at their official address
  • If you have already canceled your flight online but didn’t apply for a refund request:
    • By calling the customer support team
    • By calling their reservation department
    • By writing to the Refunds Department at their official address

For non-refundable flight reservation within 24 hours of booking:

If you cancel a non-refundable flight reservation within 24 hours of booking, Southwest offers you a refund of your original amount of payment.
